The image above is a photo of the Puig Campana mountains which overlook the village with
the famous Leon Dormido or Sleeping Lion situated on the left.
The name Polop probably come from the Greek word Polis meaning town or community, there is also the possibility of it being associated with Appolo one of the Greek gods.
It became important due to its hilltop castle (now in ruins) which controlled any sea traffic heading inland. It was occupied by the Celts, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans and Muslims untill its final conquest by the resurgent Christians. The Barony of Polop controlled an area from the borders of Guadalest to Villajosa, Benidorm and Albir.
It is situated some 15Km inland from Benidorm and is well worth a visit if only for the spectacular views found on walking up to the cemetery passing the stations of the cross on the way.

The most visited place in
Spain, built during the Moorish occupation in the 11th century. It was
conquered by the Christians in the 13th century by Jaime I.
In 1664 the castle was partially destroyed by an earthquake. Once again
during the war of the Spanish Succession the castle was damaged.
In 1976 Guadalest was declared a site of historical interest. The
museum is housed in the ancient residence of the Ortuña
family and dates back to the 17th century. One of the many historical
places of interest is the existance of an 11th century prison.
Its full name is El Castell de Guadalest with a population of arround
200 residents during the winter months. It lies at approximately 25 kms
inland from Benidorm.
Stuff about La Nucia
My working career has nearly allways involved computers and electronics. I started out working for British Telecom then moved to Kode Int. PLC. This was followed by Honeywell Measurex, working on paper mill control systems.Measurex has since been absorbed by Honeywell but the same work is still carried out.
I joined Hughes Aircraft Company (of the famous Howard) who gave me a posting to Spain where I installed and maintained design and cutting equipment in the clothing and automobile industries. Hughes, which is now called Hughes Electronicsor Hughes Missile Systems , sold the Industrial side of their business to Gerber Technology
After a long spell with them they pulled out of Spain. Not wanting to leave here, I elected to stay and opened a local computer shop which had to be closed after 5 years due to falling profit margins when the big vendors started to appear (violins in background).
So here I am in Polop, your local fix-it guy.
